Part 2, Section C contains bridges for which Jakkula was unsure of completion date or location. He wrote: "This section contains references to metallic bridges whose location or date of construction, or both, are unknown to the author. In the rather comprehensive study made in the compilation of this bibliography only the fragments of information given were uncovered. It is expected that sometime all the information on these bridges will be found, and then it will be possible to classify them in their proper chronological position. The information is, at present, classified according to country." There are some obvious matches here with the Bridgemeister inventory, but I am currently (in late 2020) in the very early stages of reconciling this list. |

Launceston Footbridge - Tasmania, Launceston
Liege Bridge - Belgium, Liege, over the River Meuse
Birkenhead Bridge - England, Birkenhead | Jakkula references a very brief Scientific American mention (Nov. 8, 1862, p. 269) regarding a 100-yard steel suspension bridge "undergoing the scientific test" in Birkenhead. It is unclear what bridge is being referenced here. Earlier in the 1800s an unrealistic 3,000+-foot River Mersey suspension bridge had been proposed near Birkenhead. |
Chester Bridge - England, Cheshire Co., Chester | Jakkula's citations here appear to be referencing two separate structures. Two of the references (from 1849 and 1850) appear to be describing the suspension bridge in Curzon Park across a ravine known as The Dingle. This bridge is no longer in existence but images clearly show a simple suspension bridge (deck resting on the cables) which matches the descriptions cited by Jakkula for those two references. Jakkula combined those references with a later 1877 reference clearly describing the nearby famous River Dee suspension bridge. |
Fens Bridge - England, Fens District in the east of England, over the Hundred Feet River
Ingestre Bridge - England, Staffordshire Co., Ingestre
Leith Bridge - England | |
Morpeth Bridge - England, Northumberland Co., Morpeth

Shoreham Bridge - England, West Sussex Co., (Shoreham) New Shoreham, over the river Adur | 1833 Norfolk - Shoreham, England, United Kingdom
Examining Jakkula's citations, this record is just based on 1840s references to William Tierney Clark's 1833 Norfolk/Shoreham bridge which Jakkula covers in Section B. |
Surrey Zoological Gardens Bridge - England
Widcombe Bridge - England, Somerset Co., Widcombe, over the Avon River | Jakkula cites an Engineering News article referring to an 1877 incident where this bridge collapsed under the weight of "200 people." This Widcombe bridge was actually a bowstring truss (or truss of similar appearance). Even recent (2010s) articles about the incident sometimes describe it as a "suspension bridge" based on the original erroneous accounts of the incident. |

Jakkula's source ("The Superiority of the Steel Bridge - Beauty, Strength, Permanence, Flexibility, Movability, Economy. American Institute of Steel Construction. 1929) does, indeed, have "Ferennez," but this almost certainly is a typo for "Térénez." |

Tauriac Bridge - France, Lot, Tauriac, over the Dordogne River | Jakkula cites an 1866 advertisement for bids to replace a ferry. The Dordogne is very wide at this point (about one kilometer) and this location is just a bit downstream from the grand 1839 Saint André-de-Cubzac multi-span suspension bridge (which failed in 1869). It is doubtful a suspension bridge was ever constructed across the Dordogne near Tauriac -- it would have been a very large and noteworthy bridge for the 1860s. |
